A Legacy of Community Service and Excellence:

What Does A Small Business Mean?

Our world is filled with news of global consolidation and multinational corporations that dominate our economy. These are massive

operations and I doubt many of us can put faces and names to many of these companies. What we don’t hear about or often think about is the small businesses that are actually the economic engine of our communities.  These “mom & pop” operations not only sustain the owner’s family but those families of the employees and suppliers.  They quietly go about their business, running profitable and sustainable operations that service our needs and support our communities and, more importantly, probably generate more economic value in our community than the massive corporations do.

There are many examples of these successful small businesses in our community.  For the past 39 years, Vac-Man has been a shining

example of a typical small business—it’s been a pillar of the Guelph community. Established in 1976, this family-run business began with a simple yet memorable vision. Inspired by the classic arcade game Pac-Man, the business name "Vac-Man" reflected the brand's playful spirit while symbolizing its purpose of "gobbling up" dirt and dust with their range of premium vacuums. Under the leadership of a dedicated owner— Jim Marshall, a SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) graduate who started this venture as a young parent—Vac-Man has grown into a trusted and profitable enterprise while staying rooted in its community-first values. Now, after decades of service, the owner wishes to retire, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, support for local families, and meaningful community impact.

LISTING OF THE WEEK

Built to Serve Guelph and Beyond

For nearly four decades, Vac-Man has operated from the same location at 30 Edinburgh Road North. This local treasure isn't just a successful business—it’s a name that generations of families trust. From selling premium vacuums to offering reliable service and repairs, Vac-Man has been the go-to destination for customers' cleaning needs. Their accessible location, newly renovated store, and plaza create the perfect environment for a turnkey operation.

Vac-Man's influence goes beyond its storefront and retail operations. Over the years, the business has become deeply woven into the community's fabric, supporting local events and community service clubs like Rotary, while earning multiple awards through Guelph Reader’s surveys. It’s the kind of business that supports not only its employees and their families, but also contributes to Guelph’s growth and well-being.

What Makes Vac-Man Special?

Vac-Man's undeniable success is built on key pillars that any aspiring business owner will appreciate. These include a steadfast commitment to customer service, exceptional supplier relationships, and innovative revenue streams. Here’s what sets Vac-Man apart:

Trusted Customer Service and Legacy

Over the years, Vac-Man has built an extensive customer list spanning three generations, all of whom value the knowledgeable, trustworthy service provided by the team. Loyal customers frequently return for repairs, new products, and household cleaning essentials.

Multi-Stream Revenue

With retail and commercial sales, central vacuum installations, and service calls, Vac-Man generates diversified revenue streams. This includes exclusive distributor rights for top brands like Sebo, Cyclo Vac, and Airstream in the Guelph and Wellington County area.

Turnkey Setup and Training

The business is fully operational with inventory, equipment, shelves, and tools in place. The current owner will also provide training to ensure a smooth and successful transition for the new buyer.

Why Vac-Man Deserves the Right Buyer

Vac-Man represents much more than a business opportunity—it’s a chance to carry forward a brand that has positively impacted countless lives. From supporting local families to contributing to the health and growth of the community, this is a business with deep roots and even deeper goodwill.
