The Strategic Power of Emotion in Today’s Market

The emotion you attach to an experience becomes the experience.” – Tony Robbins

Think about this… two sellers list their homes in the exact same market.

It’s mid-summer. Inventory is high. Buyers continue to be cautious and hesitant. Mortgage rates haven’t moved much.

Seller 1 hears the headlines: “The market is brutal. Homes are sitting. Prices are dropping.” They brace for disappointment before the first showing even happens. The lack of showings feels like a personal insult, each week without an offer a sign of failure. By the third week, they’re worn down, frustrated, and ready to pull the listing or take the first lowball offer that lands in front of them.

Seller 2 hears the same headlines—but chooses a different story. “Yes, the market is slower, but serious buyers are out there. And serious buyers make serious offers”. They prepare their home with care, price it strategically, and listen to feedback with curiosity instead of defensiveness. When an offer comes in a bit low, they see it as a starting point, not an ending. They counter. They negotiate. They close.

Same market. Same conditions. Two completely different outcomes driven not by luck, but by the emotion they chose to attach to the process.

These emotions- or as the experts call them, Cognitive Distortions- are rampant in the residential real estate world. Buyers, Sellers and Agents frequently suffer from this, especially in shifting or challenging markets.  All or nothing thinking, Catastrophizing, Overgeneralizations. The list is almost endless and most of these emotions are a negative influence on decisions and outcomes.

In real estate, your mindset and emotions are the lens through which every number, showing, and offer passes. If you tag the market as hostile, every experience will confirm it. If you tag it as full of potential, you’ll find opportunities others miss. The great agents recognize this and can help their clients manage expectations and have the right mindset for real estate process.

The Strategic Power of Emotion in Selling Your Home

  1. Pause and Reset – Before the first showing, decide how you want to feel about this process. If your tag is “strategic,” you’ll approach every moment looking for angles and opportunities.

  2. Reframe Market Feedback – An offer below asking isn’t failure, it’s an invitation to negotiate.

  3. Amplify Momentum – Celebrate each showing, each inquiry, and each step forward. These are proof the process is working.

Recognizing and challenging thought distortions and following the strategies above will certainly make the home selling or buying process much more pleasant and positive.

Challenge This Week

If you’re thinking of selling, pick your market “tag” now. Will you choose frustration… or strategy? Will you see a slower market as a barrier… or as the perfect time to stand out?

My mother used to remind me all the time that you can’t change the circumstances, but you can choose how you experience them. That choice will shape your outcome.

How will you choose to feel about selling your home? Your home buying experience?
