PELOTON EFFECT

June has arrived with summer-like weather, and many folks are finding new ways to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather, in spite of the restrictions.

Many of you know my weekend passion is competing in triathlons, with the cycling part being my favourite.  I love competing in triathlons as well as the process of training for them.  Training and racing in something that seems as improbable as an Ironman keeps things in perspective for me.

As a kid you likely remember the freedom you enjoyed riding your bike through the neighbourhood, achieving distances and speeds that you could never imagine on foot. Every time I get on the bike, I feel like a kid again – in the mood to explore and test my limits.  A three hour ride goes by in a flash, and it’s amazing how often I can solve business problems in that time frame.

Pre-Covid, I would look forward to rides with friends and colleagues.  There’s nothing like a group ride on a gorgeous Sunday morning.

If you’ve ever watched the Tour de France you’ve seen what they call the Peloton, the collective group of cyclists, riding together.  The peloton is an incredibly powerful presence.  A group of riders in close proximity to each other can go faster and further, while using up to 30% less energy than a single rider can on their own.  The draft effect is very powerful!

The peloton is a powerful analogy for what we can accomplish together as a business, community or nation.

Eight years ago, Rotarian and Guelph General Hospital supporter David Parr was inspired by Terry Manning’s fundraising bike ride across Canada. At the time, Terry was a board member of The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital and raised $33,000 for the Hospital over his 50-day, 6,000 km cycling journey. David approached Terry with an idea for a cycling fundraising event. The two of them then approached the Foundation with the idea. It was an ambitious idea and the Foundation would need more human resources to make the idea possible. So, they approached the Rotary Club of Guelph South who agreed to get involved. They also approached the Rotary Club of Guelph Trillium and encouraged them to get involved too. And that is how Tour de Guelph was created to provide a community event that would also act as a fundraiser for the hospital and many other local organizations that the two Rotary clubs support. A family-friendly event held on the fourth Sunday of June, this one-day event features rides of every skill level and age group – a truly family-friendly event that in its inaugural year brought several hundred riders out.  Over the past 7 years, the event has raised over $550,000 in net proceeds for The Foundation of the Guelph General Hospital and countless other non-profit organizations that provide support to some of the most marginalized people in our community.  A proverbial win, win, win.

The pandemic was a bit of a flat tire for the event last year.  However, the organizers were able to take an event designed for groups on a single day, and turn it into a month-long individual event that allows riders to safely enjoy riding, and still fundraise.

While the pandemic is receding and we are slowly reopening our communities and economy, the Tour de Guelph will follow last year’s format.  Organizations, like Home Group Realty, as well as families around the area will be out doing individual rides throughout the month of June.  We’ll be riding with purpose and recreating that peloton effect by knowing that hundreds of people will also be riding with the same purpose and conviction to support our community and health care system.  We’ve always recognized the value to a community that a good hospital and health care team brings, and the pandemic has magnified that value in our community.

I’m hoping you’ll take some time this month to get out and ride (or walk, or run!) Consider registering to ride for the Tour de Guelph, and if you can’t ride, consider sponsoring a rider you know!  As a long-time supporter and this year’s Teams Ambassador, Home Group Realty is encouraging riders to join or start a team, pick a route and ride date, and make an event out of it! Check out the HGR Team page for tips for getting your family or bubble engaged in this event, and feel free to join our team and track your rides with us!

My goal this month is to ride 500 km by the end of June.  If you’re participating in the Tour de Guelph this month, let us know what your riding or fundraising goals are!

Welcome to summer, enjoy the weekend, and see you on the road!
